Spotlight on... Hi-Tech in Down Times: Survival Strategies Jointly
Sponsored and Produced by: These are tough times for all businesses, and especially for emerging high-tech companies. With tighter capital markets, lower valuations and higher hurdles, entrepreneurs are struggling to get an audience with private investors and venture capitalists. Even potential customers are reluctant to part with their cash, buying fewer capital assets and new products based on emerging technologies. But it is not all bad news for emerging high-tech companies. All companies might try to maximize cash flow, reduce costs and identify the legal and fiduciary exposure in customer contracts, investor covenants and employee relationships. But unlike other firms, emerging high-tech companies have a few additional survival tools. Reposition intellectual property with licensing agreements and use them as capital in joint ventures and strategic alliances. Continue to grow products and intellectual property by providing highly specialized technical services and contract research to firms who may eventually become strategic partners and long-term customers. In this special Spotlight program, with the guidance of Akin Gump Technology Ventures and Deloitte & Touche, the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum takes a deep look at how emerging high-tech companies can survive the economic downturn and use these times to strengthen their prospects for growth. In particular, this Spotlight program will examine:
We look at these issues in a three-hour Saturday workshop featuring presentations by legal and accounting experts and panel discussions from entrepreneurs and business advisors who have turned down times into growth opportunities. The program also features an early continental breakfast, and networking with speakers and peers, and refreshments at the close of the program.
